Arts Entertainment And Sports Bloggers For Basement Startup Atlanta Metro Area details visit 09/02/2010 Arts & entertainment (and sports) bloggers for basement startup
Let's get the reality out of the way right up front: we're going to pay you a pittance, but it's more than we're paying ourselves, which is zero. Really, it's a pitiful amount of money. A
nd you'll be a freelancer on top of it. But if you're looking for an opportunity to write about area arts & entertainment on a site that will get you readers so you can build skills, clips and connections, and maybe get the occasional ticket comp, then perhaps we're a match for you. We'd call it an internship (and can if you want us to), but we'd rather just be up front about the fact that we're just trying to take advantage of you. ;-) Maybe it will turn into more, or maybe it won't. But let's set the expectation low so you won't be disappointed later on.
Here's what you provide at a minimum: some clue about what's going on in local arts & entertainment, and the ability to write in complete sentences about a topic you're passionate about: theatre, music, festivals, comedy, film and more. You make a couple of posts a week, or whenever you get your muse on. They don't have to be long, just relevant and original.
And when we say "arts and entertainment," we define it broadly. Our current categories are:
Music (all genres, especially contemporary pop/rock)
Art/Museums (galleries, museums, street art, etc.)
Pop Culture (pop music, celebrities, TV)
Theater (community theater, touring Broadway)
Books/Literature/Poetry (national book tours, local readings)
Family (would help if you actually have kids)
Festivals/Fairs/Consumer shows (the bigger the better!)
Food Culture (food culture in general, not a restaurant critic)
Comedy (local comedy club action, national tours)
Film (mainstream & indie reviews, local film festivals, revivals, etc.)
Charity/Non-profit/Fundraisers
Sports (sports as entertainment & events)
Lectures/Education/Self-improvement
Dance (performance and participatory)
TV (show recaps and show news)
Here's what we provide: a content platform that brings a bit of traffic to what you write, coaching on how to write for a blog so you can get said traffic, and a fancy title if you want one to impress your girlfriend/boyfriend/mom/dad/prospective employer. Hey, what can we say? Titles are cheap.
Qualifications: Ya gotta be able to write. We can't teach you that. More important, you have to have a passion for what people like to do when they go out, from a local indie rock show at a small club to the latest Broadway musical at the biggest theater to a small crafts show, or whatever it is that gets your heart pumping when you go out in your city.
Intrigued? Appalled? Either way, thank you for your time.
Oh yeah, if interested, we have one of those fancy online forms on our site at http://culturemob.com/blog/write-for-the-culturemob-blog. Even if you're not interested, feel free to email us and say "hi." We prefer kind encouragement, but if you want to be a hater, that's fine, too. The blog is at http://culturemob.com/blog/. Please note: We do have limited writing slots available, and they can be surprisingly competitive. So if we end up not choosing you, it won't be because we don't like you, it will simply be because we're trying to build an exclusive club and we have to exclude somebody to make the rest of us feel special while we write for little money. :-) But don't worry, half the people we select will think they want to do it, and then find out that it means they are actually expected to write something, so a slot for you might open up soon enough.
About us: We're two guys who run an events website in our spare time that covers local events in 35 U.S. metros. Art, music, theatre, sports and more. People tell us they like the blog, so we're trying to expand it. Someday all of us working on it might actually make a living from it. Hey, a guy can dream, can't he?
Please: use the form at http://culturemob.com/blog/write-for-the-culturemob-blog to apply rather than email. Email only if you have problems with the form for some reason.
